Warmth in the winter's cold

Rouge stared blankly up at the moon, her tearful eyes reflecting the pale white glow. She sighed and looked down at the frosty ground, letting a tear slip down her cheek.
  She was again at the place she came to think; a hill behind Club Rouge with a beautiful view of a small running stream. Many people just came to Night Babylon for nothing but the night life. They didn't stop for once to find the beauty that was beyond the clubs and fancy restaurants. Only Rouge had seen this beauty; besides Shadow who came up to this hill to think about Maria.
  "This is all my fault..." she murmured under her breath. "I shouldn't have left."
   Earlier that day, Rouge's younger sister, Moonlight, had shown up on her doorstep. Rouge had been surprised to see her; she had not seen her in years. Moonlight had also brought their youngest sister with her, Daisy. Her eldest sister, Buttercup, had already come to live at Club Rouge a year ago, but she had already finished school whereas Moonlight nor Daisy had gotten out of highschool yet. Rouge found this a little strange. She had invited them in and told them to make themselves comfortable.
~Flashback~
  Rouge entered the living room with three cups of hot chocolate. She handed one to both of her sisters and sat down next to Moonlight, taking a sip of her own. "So what brings you two here on such short notice?", she asked curiously.
  Moonlight sighed and glanced at her youngest sister. "Sorry about that Rouge, but seemings how we have no phone now, we couldn't really help it." There was a hint of irtability yet sadness in her voice.
  Rouge raised an eyebrow. "What d'you mean 'We have no phone'? What exactly going on?"
  Her sister looked down at the floor, then back at Rouge. "We're gonna have to stay here for a while Rouge..."
  This confused Rouge even more. "Why? What happened at home? Did we lose the house or something?! What about mom and dad? Where are they gonna stay?!"
  Moon took a deep breath and quietly answered, "They're dead Rouge."

~End Flashback~
  
  Rouge realized that it was getting colder and colder every second she remained outside. She didn't care though. She felt like she was already frozen in the inside, why not freeze on the outside too? She hadn't worn a coat when she had left the house, even though she knew it was in the coldest part of winter. Why live any longer? She thought sadly. My parents are dead, my brother is in a coma, my sisters hate me, I have nothing left to live for...
  Her thoughts were cut short when she heard footsteps behind her. She didn't even bother turning around.
  "What are you doing out here?", a familiar voice asked her.
  Rouge sighed and let another tear roll down her cheek. The tear fell from her face, and seemed to freeze in mid air. "It's nothing of your concern Shadow. Just go away."
  The black and crimson hedgehog came to stand next to her. "It is my concern when one of my allies is upset. I think I have a right to know."
  Rouge couldn't hold back the tears anymore. It's so much harder surpressing tears when some one else is around. "Do you really wanna know Shadow?" She turned to look at him, tears flowing from her now misty aqua eyes. "My mom and dad are dead, my brother may not recover, my sisters hate me and I have NO ONE!" She let out a huge sob, her tears still flowing like the stream in front of her.
  Shadow hesitated, then pulled off his leather jacket and draped it around her shoulders. He then put his arms around her and pulled her close to him in a warm embrace. She couldn't believe Shadow would even think of doing something like this. He wasn't the type of guy who would make such a caring gesture. "You have me..." he whispered softly.
  Rouge was taken completly aback by this. This wasn't the Shadow she knew. She looked into his face to find care and sincerity in his eyes. She smiled weakly and kissed him lightly on the lips. Shadow blushed furiously. He  wasn't expecting this, but slowly returned the kiss. After a few seconds she broke the kiss and nuzzled close to him. "I love you Shadow."
  Shadow smiled and blushed again. "I-I love you too Rouge."
  Though it was so cold outside, both felt warmer inside than they ever had before.
